On 17 and 18 April 2026, Bečej became a meeting place for knowledge, innovation and the spirit of research, bringing together experts, researchers and innovators from various fields in one location. Through Patentum Nexus – an international innovation and research summit and exhibition – a space was created for the exchange of ideas and for connecting scientific achievements with their practical application. Particular focus was placed on solutions in the fields of engineering, agriculture and healthcare, especially those in the final stage of development that have not yet been protected by patents.
The rich programme clearly highlighted that innovation today is not merely about ideas, but about concrete responses to the challenges of modern society – from the application of artificial intelligence and the development of new technologies to the advancement of agriculture, sustainability and industrial solutions. The particular value of the event lay precisely in the fact that projects with a high potential for application were presented, further emphasising the need for an appropriate legal framework for their protection.
In this context, the presentation by the Intellectual Property Office entitled Your Idea Deserves Protection added an important dimension to the summit as a whole. Following the presentation, Dr Nataša Milojević, Adviser at the Educational and Information Centre, engaged directly with participants and answered questions relating to specific inventions and projects, providing guidance aimed at improving understanding of their current stage of development and the possibilities for protection in the field of intellectual property. It was emphasised that an innovation reaches its full value only when it is protected, because only then does it become a secure basis for further development, investment and market application. Particular emphasis was placed on the fact that a patent is not an administrative formality, but a strategic tool that enables innovators to retain control over their solutions, prevent unauthorised use and turn an idea into a sustainable business model.
Attention was also drawn to the importance of filing applications in a timely manner, as well as to the need to consider intellectual property protection already in the early stages of idea development, especially bearing in mind that many of the innovations presented are still in the pre-patenting phase. In addition to patents, the importance of other forms of protection, such as trademarks and industrial designs, was also highlighted as an integral part of an innovation management strategy.
Patentum Nexus once again confirmed the importance of such gatherings for strengthening professional dialogue and international cooperation, while also clearly showing that the path from idea to market depends not only on creativity and knowledge, but also on the ability to recognise, protect and strategically develop an innovation.
