“Honey from Rtanj Mountain” is the protected geographical indication for the poly-floral honey produced exclusively on the part of territories of the municipalities of Sokobanja and Boljevac or on the defined geographical area of the mountain of Rtanj. Thanks to the richness of flora on the mountain of Rtanj, having 17.55% of the total number of sorts and sub-sorts of flora in Serbia, in Rtanj Honey, the analysis identified even 96 types of pollen. Also, in the flora of the mountain of Rtanj, 25 endemic sorts and sub-sorts of flora represent indication of exceptional originality of the geographical area where “Honey from Rtanj Mountain” is produced.
The color of the “Honey from Rtanj Mountain” varies from light ocher yellow to light amber, and the taste varies from the modest acid over the moderately to intensively sweet. Fragrance and aroma of the “Honey from Rtanj Mountain” represents harmonious combination of plant, fruit and flower notes that can be very subtle, hardly perceptible or moderately expressed. The fragrance of the “Honey from Rtanj Mountain” reminds of the dried plants, fermented and processed fruit interwoven by light flower fragrances.
“Honey from Rtanj Mountain”, at the beginning of this year got the first authorized user, the Association Local Action Group Rtanj from Sokobanja, which includes, so far, 30 individual producers of this honey which passed the certification process. The individual producers, through the certification, confirmed the geographical origin, as well as the guaranteed quality and specific features of the “Honey from Rtanj Mountain” which they produce.
