Serbia, according to the new Global Innovation Index 2023, published on September 27, 2023, has been ranked on the 53rd place, which is an improvement for two places in comparison to the 55th place in 2022.
The Global Innovation Index, in this year`s 16th edition, gives a survey of conditions with regard to innovative performances in 132 countries, as well as 100 leading clusters in the field of science and technology. From this report, it can be found out which are the most innovative economies in the world, what is the ranking according to the innovative performances and what are the advantages and weaknesses of those economies, bearing in mind 80 indicators with the assistance of which it is possible to determine the degree of innovative capacity of some state.
Mr. Daren Tang, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), underlined in his opening address that “In 2023, we find the environment for innovations versatile with important possibilities and great challenges on the horizon. On one side, the improvement of new technologies continues unhindered. As it has been identified in GII last year, two key directions of innovation development leave their mark on the economy and society: digital Innovations, based on artificial intelligence (AI), supercomputers and automatization and the direction of innovation development in deep science, based on biotechnologies and nanotechnologies. Many key indicators of technological development show positive trends. On the other side, slow growth and a high rate of inflation, together with the long-lasting effects of pandemics, hinder global innovations.
Which are the most innovative economies in 2023? For the 13th year in a row, Switzerland is the most innovative economy in 2023, while Sweden, the USA, the UK and Singapore are in the first five leading economies, followed by Finland, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and the Republic of Korea. Also, the report indicates that from 19 to 39 analyzed European countries showed progress in ranking in comparison to 7 countries that showed advance in the previous report.
With regard to the innovative performances of Serbia, the GII shows that in the group of 36 countries with higher average income, Serbia is on the 8th place, which also represents progress for two places in comparison with the previous year. The GII states that Serbia is on the list of the first 50 countries, with a particularly strong impact with regard to direct foreign investments (11th place) and the rise of the productivity of work (14th place). In the additional ranking offered for inspection by GII, implying the ranking of science and technology clusters according to the innovative performances at the local level, the science and technology cluster of Belgrade is on the additional list at the 16th place of 18 ranked clusters, not included in the list of the best 100 clusters. However, Serbia is included in the group of countries having problems with the transition from the “Input into output” indicators influencing the total impact of innovations.
