Standards-essential patents and music may not seem connected at first glance, but think about digital broadcasting, the MP3 format or simply listening to music on a smartphone with wireless headphones connected via Bluetooth.
All this is possible thanks to technological standardization. That is why, in 2025, the year dedicated to intellectual property and music, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is conducting a global orchestra that performs a complex symphony dedicated to patents essential to standards. The opus is colorful, with modernist dissonances and fugue-like elements, but if performed well, everything ends in harmony.
The Symposium on Patents Essential for Standards will be held on September 18 and 19, 2025 in Geneva, with the possibility of following the sessions online.
To provide a global platform for dialogue within the framework of the WIPO Strategy on SEPs 2024-2026, the symposium will bring together speakers, panelists and participants from around the world, who will share their experiences and perspectives on policy, legal and economic issues related to standards essential patents and their licensing – not only in the field of music technology.
