This month, we successfully completed the implementation of the project in Serbia in the framework of the Development Agenda which was financed by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and implemented by the Department for Small and Medium Enterprises of the WIPO and the Education and Information Center of the Intellectual Property Office.

On Thursday, December 9, the students of the fifth year of the Faculty of Machine Engineering visited the Intellectual Property Office. On that occasion, the experts of the Education and Information Center held lectures regarding the forms of intellectual property rights and the importance of the protection of intellectual property rights. The emphasize was placed on the topic of patent protection of new technical solutions and patent information, while the students were also demonstrated the manner of search of publicly available global data base of patent documentation Esp@cenet with the explanation of using the data base in the form of source of technical information for research and establishment of novelty of the invention.

The Belgrade Fair, held from December 2-4, 2010, was the host of the ninth International Fair of Entrepreneurship “Business Base” which was organized by the National Agency for the Regional Development. The Intellectual Property Office traditionally took part in the Fair.

In the Intellectual Property Office, in the period December 1-3, 2010, a workshop was held on the indications of geographical origin, attended, apart from the representatives of the Office, by the representatives of the Swiss Federal Institute for Intellectual Property, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Waterworks, Institute for Nutrition Technologies from Novi Sad, Accreditation Body of Serbia, Organization SEEDEV, as well as domestic and foreign experts from this field. The first part of the workshop was referring to the accreditation and certification of the indications of geographical origin and institution “GLOBAL G.A.P.”, while the other part addressed the topic of implementation of the valid laws regarding the indications of geographical origin, including the development of guidelines for the registration of indications.

In the Intellectual Property Office, the first meeting of the working group dedicated to the elaboration of the National Strategy on Intellectual Property was held on April 30th, 2010. Apart from the representatives of the Office, the meeting was attended also by the representatives of other bodies and institutions – the Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Justice, Ministry for Telecommunications and Informatic Society, Chamber of Commerce of Serbia, Office for European Integrations, University in Belgrade, Customs Administration, Agency for the Investments and the Promotion of Export and the Republic Broadcasting Agency.

The Vice-president of the Government, in charge of the European integrations, and Minister for Science and Technological Development, Mr. Bozidar Djelic and the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Swiss Confederation, Mr. Michael Ambul, signed a Memorandum on Understanding which will enable Serbia to improve the system of protection of geographical indications for the products on the foreign markets. The memorandum has been concluded with the aim to improve the international economic and commercial system in Serbia through the realization of the Project of Technical Assistance to Serbia in the Field of Intellectual Property.

In the Intellectual Property Office, on Friday, January 29, 2010, the Education and Information Centre (EIC) was festively opened. The Project which created the Centre was initiated and realized with the assistance of the European Union, which donated for this purpose 2 million Euros and the European Patent Office which participated in the financing with 200,000 Euros and manages the project. The Education and Informative Centre shall work on the awareness raising regarding the social importance of the intellectual property and continually develop the professional abilities in the mentioned field, and in such a manner give support to the Republic of Serbia in the development of the competitive and dynamic knowledge based economy.

On the occasion of the celebration of the opening of the Education and Information Centre, the Intellectual Property Office and the Chamber of Commerce of Serbia signed a Memorandum on Understanding. The Memorandum was signed by Mrs. Branka Totic, Director of the Office and Mrs. Vidosava Dzagic, Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce of Serbia. Memorandum with the Office was also signed by the President of the Chamber of Commerce of Vojvodina, Mr. Nikola Stojsic, then presidents and representatives of the chambers of commerce of the towns of Belgrade, Kragujevac, Kraljevo, Nis, Sremska Mitrovica, Uzice, Valjevo and Zrenjanin. The signing of the memorandum makes official the participation of the Chamber of Commerce of Serbia and the chamber system in the realization of the project “Establishment of the Education and Information Centre in the Intellectual Property Office of the Republic of Serbia”.

The Intellectual Property Office of the Republic of Serbia has created an Education and Information Centre on Intellectual Property. This project is an IPA 2007 EU funded project, co-funded and implemented by the European Patent Office. The Centre has the mandate to raise in Serbia the general awareness on IP and to offer IP related education services. The official opening of the Centre takes place in Belgrade on January 29th, 2010.
