The Vice-president of the Government, in charge of the European integrations, and Minister for Science and Technological Development, Mr. Bozidar Djelic and the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Swiss Confederation, Mr. Michael Ambul, signed a Memorandum on Understanding which will enable Serbia to improve the system of protection of geographical indications for the products on the foreign markets. The memorandum has been concluded with the aim to improve the international economic and commercial system in Serbia through the realization of the Project of Technical Assistance to Serbia in the Field of Intellectual Property.
This Project, which has been financed by the Government of Switzerland with 780,000 Swiss francs, was initiated in December 2009, and it will last for three years. In the enforcement of the Project, the Ministry for Science and Technological Development and the Intellectual Property Office will participate on the Serbian side. On the other side, we find as partners in the enforcement the Swiss Federal Institute for Intellectual Property and SEEDEV, the consulting company for development in the South-East Europe. One of the most important goals of the project is the creation of conditions for the establishment of the associations of producers of products with the protected indications of origin that express the highest economic potential. Such associations would take care of the harmonization of quality of these products and of their commercialization and adequate protection.
Mr. Djelic emphasized that this project is an excellent support for the realization of the goal of our country to enter this year in the membership of the European Patent Office, which will enable Serbia to get affirmation as a country that produces ready made products, and not just raw material. Mr. Ambul explained that the enforcement of the project of the system of protection of geographical indications will enable the gourmet Serbian products, like cream cheese and others, to find their way to the European market, and it will also contribute to the faster accession of Serbia to the World Trade Organization.
