In Rome, in the organization of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Italy on January 27, 2014, a conference was held under the title Intellectual Property - Strategic Factor for Economic Development on the Global Market.
The Conference was addressed and attended by the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization, Mr. Francis Gurry, high officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Italy, representatives of the various ministries of this counry, representatives of the organizations dealing with IP protection and numerous businessmen. Minister of the Foreign Affairs of Italy E. Boninno stated that the IP represents an important factor for the recovery of Italian industry, underlining that products and innovations of SMEs in Italy can be competitive at the market with products from the countries with lower production costs if they are protected from counterfeiting or copying in an adequate way. The general secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy, M. Valensise emphasized the importance of protection of well known and characteristic products of Italy by indications of geographical origin. The Director general of the WIPO, Dr. Francis Gurry, gave results of investigation that shows that in the period 2008-2010, 26% of the total number of employees in the EU worked in the sectors with the high level of protection of IP, that produced 39% of total GDP in EU. It refers to the data from the Office for the Harmonization of Internal Market and the European Patent Organization from the report „ Industries with the intensive use of IP rights in EU“.
